Family

Hanako: Satoshi's mother, she has raised him as a single mother since his father left them both at some point. She is somewhat of an airhead, but being Orchid-hakase's student at one point, she must be somewhat smart. Hanako has an adopted Barrierd, named Barri-chan, who helps out at home, and she spends a lot of time with Orchid-hakase.

Friends

Takeshi: He is aiming to become the world's best breeder. When Satoshi first met him, he was having to take care of his siblings since both his parents had abandoned the family. Takeshi was also the leader of the Nibi City Gym at the time and Satoshi battled him twice, though he lost the first and forfeit the second. Takeshi felt pity for Satoshi so he gave him the badge anyway, then Munoo turned up and told Takeshi to go follow his dreams as well. Ever since, Takeshi has travelled with Satoshi, except for that time in the Orange Islands.

Kasumi: Satoshi first met Kasumi when running from the Onisuzume. After she fished him out of the river, he took her bike. Pikachu ended up frying it to a crisp and Kasumi followed Satoshi around ever since, claiming that she wanted him to pay her back for the bike. At the end of the Jouto saga, Kasumi's sisters asked her to return to the Hanada City gym and Joi also gave her the bike that the previous Joi had been repairing, so Kasumi had to return to the gym and there she remains to this day. She appeared in Houen and the Battle Frontier with a new outfit, but has yet to turn up in the Diamond and Pearl arc.

Kenji: Satoshi and Kasumi met Kenji in the Orange Islands. He travelled with them through the islands and back to Masara Town for one simple reason: to meet his idol, Orchid-hakase. Tracey then stayed with Orchid-hakase as his lab assistant.

Haruka: Satoshi met Haruka when he came over to Houen. Pikachu fried her bike as well, but she chose not to hold it against them. Haruka wanted to travel with Satoshi, saying that she was nervous about travelling alone, and was quite pleased when he accepted. Satoshi was a mentor to Haruka at the start of their journey since she was so clueless and had no idea what she was really doing. Haruka settled on doing Pokémon contests and has matured into an experienced co-ordinator. She turned up in Shinou to participate in the Mikuri Cup, briefly taking an excursion from her journey in Johto, but sadly lost in the final round to Hikari.

Masato: Haruka's brother, he joined Satoshi and Haruka after they stopped by Touka City. He is not old enough to have his own Pokémon and go on a journey by himself yet. He does have plenty of knowledge on Pokémon and befriended a Ralts that he hopes will be his first Pokémon when he is finally old enough.

Hikari: The replacement co-ordinator whom Satoshi and Takeshi meet in Shinou. Pikachu fried her bike as well. Noticing a pattern yet? Hikari started off as bubbly and cheerful, but quickly became depressed when she had a bad streak in contests. However, that bad streak has now come to an end, which is a relief. Hikari is a big fan of Orchid-hakase's poems and even fangirls Shigeru because he is Orchid-hakase's grandson. She also has the motto "Daijoubu", meaning "I'm fine"

Shigeru: Satoshi's former rival. After losing to Satoshi in the Jouto League, he decided he no longer wished to try and become a Pokémon Master and set out to be a Pokémon researcher instead. Shigeru has done some interesting things such as reviving fossilized Pokémon. Currently, he travels around the Shinou region and has done such tasks as helping take care of some Tatetops or going to look at the mysterious lake Pokémon that Satoshi saw. He hasn't shown up a lot in Diamond and Pearl, sadly.

Orchid-hakase: Orchid-hakase is the local Pokémon professor in Masara Town. He often gives Satoshi advice on his journey. He likes to write poetry and also spends a lot of time with Satoshi's mother, but there's nothing suspicious about that. Nope. Not at all.

Foes

Roketto-dan (Musashi, Kojiro and Nyarth): Ever since the second episode, these three have been following Satoshi around and trying to steal his Pikachu. They will try to steal other Pokémon as well. It's all their fault Satoshi lost to Hiroshi in the Sekiei League. But even though sometimes they can be incredibly annoying, they are still human (well, Musashi and Kojiro anyway. Meowth is just a Pokémon. A talking one.) and they aren't really all that evil either. They are just stalkers who like causing trouble now and then, and have actually worked with the "twerps" on more than one occasion. In fact, they even helped Satoshi to save the world in the second movie and assisted in saving his life in the third one.

Shinji: Satoshi's rival in Shinou. Satoshi has yet to actually win a Pokémon battle against him, though their first battle was a draw. Shinji is cold to most people he meets and not so friendly. He treats his Pokémon rather harshly, and was especially hard on Hikozaru until he gave up and let it go.
