His name is Satoshi, or Ash in English, and we are all aware of that, but what is the meaning behind those names? Probably not much, but it's still a fun little thing to look into which is why I bothered to make a page about it.

First we'll start with Satoshi (サトシ)

Of course, the name of Satoshi comes from the creator of Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri himself. He isn't the only one to have this honour. Shigeru actually gets his name from Shigeru Miyamoto. Tajiri-sama's given name is written as . The meaning of this particular kanji is "wisdom".

Now, that may seem kind of ironic considering that Satoshi isn't exactly the brightest ten year old boy when the anime begins. He fails to recognise so many Pokémon at first, despite having a room full of Pokémon merchandising and possibly watching TV a lot, and he did have a tendency to get confused very easily. He's also kind of bad at seeing through Roketto-dan's disguises, something which has not changed to this very day.

However, Satoshi has come a long way since then. Remember how he tried to catch a Poppo with his pajamas and also sent out Caterpie against a Pigeon? Satoshi has become a little smarter over the course of the anime, though he can still mess up from time to time, but so what? He is a human being. All human beings are capable of forgetting things. It doesn't mean he's a complete idiot.

Unlike Ash, Satoshi does not have a last name.

And now, for the English name... well, I don't think whoever named him was going for any particular meaning when they named him Ash. o_o It could come from Satoshi. Maybe. His last name of Ketchum obviously comes from the motto, Gotta Catch 'em All. Kind of lame, I guess, but at least Ketchum is a plausible last name. Poor Tracey... you can't seriously tell me there's anyone out there with the surname Sketchit!
